When we talk about a child's senses, most parents immediately think of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

But pediatric therapists pay close attention to several additional sensory systems—and one of the most important is proprioception.

Proprioception is the sensory system that helps your child understand where their body is, how it is moving, and how much force their muscles need to use without having to constantly look at what they are doing.

It is working when your toddler climbs onto the couch, carries a basket of toys, pushes open a heavy door, hugs you tightly, crawls through a tunnel, or jumps from one surface to another.

For many children, proprioceptive input also has an organizing effect. Activities involving pushing, pulling, carrying, climbing, squeezing, and resistance may help some children feel more grounded and ready to participate.

What Is Proprioception in Simple Terms?

Proprioception is your body's internal sense of position and movement.

Specialized sensory receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints send information to the nervous system about factors such as:

  • Where body parts are positioned

  • How quickly they are moving

  • How much force is being used

  • Whether muscles are stretching or contracting

  • How the body needs to adjust to complete a movement

You use proprioception constantly without consciously thinking about it.

Why Proprioception Matters for Child Development

The developing nervous system combines proprioceptive information with input from vision, touch, the vestibular system, hearing, and other senses to create an internal map of the body.

For example, a toddler needs proprioceptive information to determine how hard to push a toy stroller, how much force to use when placing a block on a tower, and where their feet are while climbing playground stairs.

When this feedback is efficient, movements can become increasingly automatic.

When a child needs more or clearer input, they may seek stronger physical experiences to better understand where their body is.

What Does Proprioception Have to Do With Regulation?

Parents are often surprised to learn that movement and body awareness can influence emotional regulation.

The sensory and nervous systems are closely connected. A child must continuously process information about both the environment and their own body while trying to remain engaged, attentive, and emotionally available.

Proprioceptive activities provide strong, predictable input through muscles and joints. Many children experience this kind of input as organizing.

That is why some children naturally seek:

  • Big hugs

  • Pillow crashes

  • Climbing

  • Carrying

  • Pushing

  • Pulling

  • Wrestling

  • Jumping

  • Squeezing into small spaces

You may see a child go from scattered and constantly moving to more focused after pushing a loaded laundry basket or climbing at the playground.

However, it is important to be precise: proprioceptive activities do not automatically “activate the parasympathetic nervous system” or guarantee calm. Sensory responses are individualized. An activity that organizes one child may be neutral or uncomfortable for another.

The goal is to observe what your child's behavior tells you before, during, and after the activity.

Signs Your Child May Be Seeking Proprioceptive Input

Children often communicate sensory needs through movement before they have words to explain what their body is asking for.

A child seeking strong proprioceptive input may:

  • Crash into furniture or cushions

  • Hug people very tightly

  • Push or pull objects frequently

  • Jump repeatedly

  • Wrestle or roughhouse whenever possible

  • Chew on clothing or objects

  • Climb constantly

  • Stomp their feet

  • Prefer very active play

  • Squeeze into tight spaces

  • Lean heavily against furniture or people

  • Use more force than expected during play

  • Frequently break crayons or push too hard with pencils

Not every child who does these things has a sensory processing problem.

Toddlers are naturally physical. Running, climbing, jumping, carrying, and testing force are developmentally appropriate activities.

What matters clinically is the pattern, intensity, frequency, and impact on everyday participation.

What Is “Heavy Work”?

In occupational therapy, heavy work is an informal term for activities that provide significant proprioceptive input through muscles and joints.

It does not mean asking children to lift heavy weights.

For young children, heavy work usually involves everyday activities such as:

  • Pushing

  • Pulling

  • Carrying

  • Crawling

  • Climbing

  • Digging

  • Squeezing

  • Lifting developmentally appropriate objects

  • Moving against resistance

The beauty of heavy work is that it can be incorporated into ordinary family life.

A child does not necessarily need special sensory equipment.

Helping carry groceries, pushing a laundry basket, digging in the garden, climbing playground equipment, or crawling through couch cushions can all provide proprioceptive experiences.

10 Proprioceptive Activities Parents Can Try at Home

1. Push a Laundry Basket

Place a few blankets, stuffed animals, or lightweight items inside a basket and let your child push it across the floor.

Adjust the resistance so the activity feels challenging but successful.

2. Carry Something With Purpose

Toddlers often love having a “job.”

They might:

  • Carry towels to the bedroom

  • Bring books back to a shelf

  • Carry a small grocery bag

  • Move stuffed animals into a basket

  • Bring diapers to the changing area

This combines sensory input with independence and participation.

3. Try Animal Walks

Bear walks, crab walks, bunny hops, and crawling games require children to support their body weight through their limbs.

Keep the activity playful rather than treating it as an exercise drill.

4. Build a Pillow Crash Zone

Create a safe area using couch cushions or pillows where your child can crawl, climb, roll, and land.

Supervision and environmental safety are important, particularly for children who seek intense movement.

5. Play Tug-of-War

A towel can become a simple resistance activity.

Keep the game gentle and match the resistance to your child's strength and developmental abilities.

6. Let Your Child Help With Household Tasks

Try:

  • Pushing chairs in

  • Carrying laundry

  • Sweeping

  • Wiping tables

  • Moving cushions

  • Watering plants

  • Helping pull a wagon

Functional activities often provide just as much useful sensory input as specialized activities.

7. Climb at the Playground

Climbing naturally combines proprioceptive, vestibular, visual, and motor-planning demands.

Let your child attempt age-appropriate challenges while providing the level of support needed for safety.

8. Play With Resistance Materials

Playdough, therapy putty designed for children, kinetic dough, and other resistive materials can provide proprioceptive input through the hands.

This also supports fine-motor development.

9. Try Wall Pushes

Ask your child to place both hands on the wall and “push the house down.”

Ten playful pushes can provide quick muscle-and-joint input during a transition.

10. Create a Carry-Push-Crawl Routine

Instead of thinking about “sensory exercises,” build movement into normal transitions.

Carry pajamas to the bedroom → push the toy basket into place → crawl like a bear to the bathroom.

The activity becomes part of daily life rather than another task parents must remember.

Put Proprioception Into Your Morning Routine

If your child wakes up ready to jump, climb, crash, or move, try giving that movement a safe purpose before asking them to sit still.

How Proprioception Can Support Transitions

Transitions require significant neurological work.

A young child has to:

  1. Stop an activity

  2. Shift attention

  3. Process a new instruction

  4. Regulate disappointment

  5. Organize the body for the next task

A child who is already dysregulated may have difficulty completing all of these steps.

This is why adding movement to a transition can sometimes work better than repeating instructions.

Instead of:

“Put your shoes on. I already asked you three times.”

You might try:

“Let's carry these books to the shelf, then stomp like dinosaurs to our shoes.”

The sensory activity is not a reward for complying. It is a way of helping the nervous system prepare for the demand.

Proprioception, Big Feelings, and Meltdowns

Children often seek stronger movement when they are becoming dysregulated.

You may notice that before a meltdown your child:

  • Runs faster

  • Crashes harder

  • Becomes rougher

  • Climbs more impulsively

  • Throws their body into furniture

  • Seeks intense hugs or wrestling

Sometimes this represents a child attempting to regulate themselves.

The challenge is that sensory seeking and sensory overload can happen in the same child.

A child might initially seek intense movement but eventually become over-aroused.

That means “more sensory input” is not always the answer.

Watch the child's response.

Signs the activity may be organizing

  • Movement becomes more controlled

  • Breathing settles

  • The child can transition afterward

  • Play becomes more purposeful

  • Communication increases

Signs the activity may be escalating the child

  • Movement becomes faster and less controlled

  • The child cannot stop

  • Safety awareness decreases

  • Voice volume or emotional intensity rises

  • The child becomes increasingly distressed

When this happens, reduce stimulation rather than adding more.

Proprioception and Sensory Seeking Are Not Diagnoses

A child can love crashing, climbing, and deep pressure without having a disorder.

Sensory preferences exist across normal development.

An occupational therapist becomes particularly interested when sensory patterns begin affecting function.

For example:

  • Your child cannot participate in meals because they constantly leave the table to crash or climb.

  • Movement needs make preschool participation difficult.

  • Your child frequently gets hurt because they seek more force than they can safely manage.

  • Dressing, grooming, sleep, or toileting are significantly affected by sensory responses.

  • Emotional regulation remains difficult despite developmentally appropriate support.

  • Sensory behaviors interfere with relationships, play, or learning.

This distinction helps prevent normal toddler movement from becoming unnecessarily medicalized while still identifying children who genuinely benefit from support.

When Proprioception Looks Different: Body Awareness and Force Grading

Some children do not obviously seek movement but still show signs that proprioceptive processing may deserve attention.

You may notice:

  • Frequent bumping into objects

  • Difficulty judging personal space

  • Using too much or too little force

  • Dropping objects frequently

  • Appearing unusually rough with toys

  • Difficulty grading pencil pressure

  • Challenges coordinating dressing

  • Looking at their feet frequently when moving

  • Difficulty learning new motor sequences

These signs can also have many other explanations. Vision, strength, motor coordination, attention, vestibular processing, developmental differences, and medical factors may all contribute.

This is why clinicians assess the whole child, rather than assuming that a single sensory system explains everything.

What Occupational Therapy Can Do

Pediatric occupational therapists evaluate how sensory processing, motor skills, attention, regulation, and environment affect a child's ability to participate in everyday life.

An OT evaluation may look at:

  • Proprioceptive processing

  • Vestibular processing

  • Tactile responses

  • Motor planning

  • Balance and coordination

  • Postural control

Treatment is not simply a collection of sensory activities.
