Signs Your Child May Be Seeking Proprioceptive Input
Children often communicate sensory needs through movement before they have words to explain what their body is asking for.
A child seeking strong proprioceptive input may:
Crash into furniture or cushions
Hug people very tightly
Push or pull objects frequently
Jump repeatedly
Wrestle or roughhouse whenever possible

What Is “Heavy Work”?
In occupational therapy, heavy work is an informal term for activities that provide significant proprioceptive input through muscles and joints.
It does not mean asking children to lift heavy weights.
For young children, heavy work usually involves everyday activities such as:
Pushing
Pulling
Carrying
Crawling
Climbing
Digging
Squeezing
Lifting developmentally appropriate objects
Moving against resistance
The beauty of heavy work is that it can be incorporated into ordinary family life.
A child does not necessarily need special sensory equipment.

10 Proprioceptive Activities Parents Can Try at Home
1. Push a Laundry Basket
Place a few blankets, stuffed animals, or lightweight items inside a basket and let your child push it across the floor.
Adjust the resistance so the activity feels challenging but successful.
2. Carry Something With Purpose
Toddlers often love having a “job.”
They might:
Carry towels to the bedroom
Bring books back to a shelf
Carry a small grocery bag
Move stuffed animals into a basket
Bring diapers to the changing area
This combines sensory input with independence and participation.
3. Try Animal Walks
Bear walks, crab walks, bunny hops, and crawling games require children to support their body weight through their limbs.
Keep the activity playful rather than treating it as an exercise drill.
4. Build a Pillow Crash Zone
Create a safe area using couch cushions or pillows where your child can crawl, climb, roll, and land.
Supervision and environmental safety are important, particularly for children who seek intense movement.
5. Play Tug-of-War
A towel can become a simple resistance activity.
Keep the game gentle and match the resistance to your child's strength and developmental abilities.

9. Try Wall Pushes
Ask your child to place both hands on the wall and “push the house down.”

10. Create a Carry-Push-Crawl Routine
Instead of thinking about “sensory exercises,” build movement into normal transitions.
For example:
Carry pajamas to the bedroom → push the toy basket into place → crawl like a bear to the bathroom.

How Proprioception Can Support Transitions
Transitions require significant neurological work.
A young child has to:
Stop an activity
Shift attention
Process a new instruction
Regulate disappointment
Organize the body for the next task
A child who is already dysregulated may have difficulty completing all of these steps.
This is why adding movement to a transition can sometimes work better than repeating instructions.
Instead of:
“Put your shoes on. I already asked you three times.”
You might try:
“Let's carry these books to the shelf, then stomp like dinosaurs to our shoes.”
The sensory activity is not a reward for complying. It is a way of helping the nervous system prepare for the demand.

Proprioception, Big Feelings, and Meltdowns
Children often seek stronger movement when they are becoming dysregulated.
You may notice that before a meltdown your child:
Runs faster
Crashes harder
Becomes rougher
Climbs more impulsively
Throws their body into furniture
Seeks intense hugs or wrestling
Sometimes this represents a child attempting to regulate themselves.
The challenge is that sensory seeking and sensory overload can happen in the same child.
A child might initially seek intense movement but eventually become over-aroused.
That means “more sensory input” is not always the answer.
Watch the child's response.
Signs the activity may be organizing
Movement becomes more controlled
Breathing settles
The child can transition afterward
Play becomes more purposeful
Communication increases
Signs the activity may be escalating the child
Movement becomes faster and less controlled
The child cannot stop
Safety awareness decreases
Voice volume or emotional intensity rises
The child becomes increasingly distressed
When this happens, reduce stimulation rather than adding more.

Proprioception and Sensory Seeking Are Not Diagnoses
A child can love crashing, climbing, and deep pressure without having a disorder.
Sensory preferences exist across normal development.
An occupational therapist becomes particularly interested when sensory patterns begin affecting function.

Your child cannot participate in meals because they constantly leave the table to crash or climb.
Movement needs make preschool participation difficult.
